Advent 2006: Week 2

LEFC Family Advent Readings
Advent Week #2: Mary’s Song
“Mighty Over All”
Luke 1:46-55
December 10, 2006

“Advent” means “coming.” Christmas is coming. Jesus has come and is coming again.

This Advent season, we are preparing our hearts for Christmas and for Jesus by delighting in God through the “Song of Mary” found in the Bible in Luke chapter 1 verses 46 through 55.

[READ LUKE 1:46-55]

Last week, the first Sunday of Advent, we lit a candle [LIGHT FIRST CANDLE] to call us to glorify the Lord and rejoice in God our savior.

This week, we light a candle [LIGHT SECOND CANDLE] to celebrate how our God is mighty over all.

When Mary sang her song of praise to the Lord, one of the first things she said was, “From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me–holy is his name.”

The Angel Gabriel had told her that “Nothing is impossible with God,” and Mary believed it!

God is mighty over all. He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly more than we can ask or imagine.

And that means that we can trust Him with the details and trials of our lives.

May this candle remind us to entrust our lives to the God who is mighty over all–holy is his name.

Amen.

Advent Bible Study for Families

1. Re-read Mary’s song in Luke 1:46-55. What does she say about the mighty power of God? Do you think that Gabriel’s announcement (1:26-38) influenced her understanding of God’s power? In what way?

2. Read Isaiah 40 as a family. What does Isaiah reveal about the mighty power of God? Is anything to difficult for Him?

3. Why do we try “to do life on our own?” What difference does it make to belong to a God who is “mighty over all?” Is there any area of your life that you are not yet trusting God with? Why? (Have each person in the family share.)

4. As a family, sing Hark, the Herald Angels Sing.
