I enjoyed preaching the book of Ruth, and I was most helped by these three commentaries:
From Famine to Fullness: The Gospel According to Ruth by Dean Ulrich
Ulrich brings out several nuances that would be lost on casual readers of the book and then makes smart (and unforced) connections with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Pastoral. Insightful.
The New American Commentary: Volume 6 - Judges-Ruth by Daniel I. Block
The best all around commentary. Block is careful and reasoned in his judgments--I almost always was persuaded. He is also fairly comprehensive and knowledgeable about the history of interpretation. If I could only buy one commentary, it would be this one.
Judges, Ruth (The NIV Application Commentary) by K. Lawson Younger, Jr.
Younger builds off of Block but also takes the application much further. After reading both Block and Younger each week, I felt like I understood what was going on.
