Psalm 71 from Poor Bishop Hooper's EveryPsalm Project

Last week, Jesse Roberts sent me an advanced copy of Psalm 71 to help me write "Since My Youth" for Sunday's sermon. Poor Bishop Hooper's "EveryPsalm" project has been an invaluable aid to me this year.

I look forward to Wednesdays when the latest comes out, and today was Psalm 71:

The Golgotha Experience - Prepare Your Heart for Holy Week

Artistically-speaking, nothing has been helpful to my heart the last few months as the music of Jesse and Leah Roberts, also known as Poor Bishop Hooper.

I've been hungrily downloading each weekly installment of their 150 week EveryPsalm project, and as I've been writing sermons from the end of the Gospel of Matthew, I've had their Golgotha Experience on constant repeat.

The Roberts have recently released the full live performance of their Golgotha Experience album with a companion devotional book--all for free!

This week, as so many are situated at home, might be the perfect time to sit down and take in the whole thing either on your own or with your family. I highly recommend it.

"She Waits" by the Gray Havens

The newest album by our friends, the Gray Havens, is now out!

"She Waits" is like but unlike all of their previous work.

There is plenty of the explorative, imaginative, cinematic, narrative-based songs we've come to enjoy with Dave Radford lyrics, vocals [lots of falsetto!], and keyboards and Licia's distinctive counter-point voice coming through. But there are also more instruments here than ever before, fewer guitars or folk-sounds, and some spoken-word poetry from Propaganda (see video below). Now, that's different!

Dave explained some of the development of their music in this interview about the song God's Storehouse (which almost sounds like a 50's do-wop, but it doesn't really).

My favorite track is "See You Again" which is the most fun funeral song I've ever heard.

The whole album is worth listening to on repeat.

"Fire and Stone" - New Album by the Gray Havens

We are rejoicing with our friends, Dave and Licia Radford, who are also our favorite band, The Gray Havens, on the release of their new album "Fire and Stone" on iTunes.

"Fire and Stone" consists of 10 new songs written by the Radfords. It's consistent with the style and themes of their first album "Where Eyes Don't Go" but also develops new evocative sounds, more energy, and even deeper lyrics.

Introduction Video

1. Inheritance

Nautical allusions and allegory with a strong declarative chorus:

We will treasure and we will hold on.
To the light, the light before us.
We'll be confident, we'll be bold
If we know that the Light is for us.

2. Songs in the Night

A searching song about the heart-breaking love of our Savior.

3. The Stone

This was released last Easter season. The "stone" in the song has at least two meanings.

I love how Dave takes that first and last stone and carries it 100 yards for the touchdown!

Get all the lyrics in this video:

4. Sirens

Hold on, my heart!
You've tasted joy that's more than this!

A anthem about defeating temptation by the power of a greater promise. The animated video creatively captures both the feel and the message of the music.

5. Jack and Jill, pt. 2

This is my second favorite song on the album. I first got to hear it at our church when the Radfords first visited us. It's a whimsical feel good song with a glorious message about what Tolkien called "eucatastrophe."

We were feeling new. As if everything sad came untrue.

The Radfords were kind enough to give us permission to use snippets of "Jack and Jill, pt.2" in each episode of the Resisting Gossip Video Teaching Series. In the blooper video below, we got to play most of the song.

6. Music, They Call Me

Dave loves to write stories and images into his songs. Here he got to personify music itself and tell its story. They go places musically in this one that they weren't able to ever before.

7. Stole My Fame (To: Grace)

This is easily my kids' favorite song on the album. We love to turn up the car radio when it comes on and sing along. It's catchy and fun but at the same time gets across the boast-defeating power of grace. I think that this is the song that makes the most of Licia's voice and shows her range.

I love their recently released video for "Stole My Fame." It's all done in one take and features some musicians from other well-known bands.

8. Under the Mountain

I can't say that I understand all the lyrics in this one, but I know it's about the wonders of heaven and when they soar in the song, I long for "the home of righteousness" (2 Peter 3:13).

Alleluia, welcome home!
Yes, I was home.

9. If the Walls Move

A completely different metaphor for the Christian life.

10. Far Kingdom

My favorite song--full of longing and the anticipation of ever-increasing joy.

There’s a river we will know
Ever clear and ever full
From the fount that overflows
In the light of the King
And when we drink it we will find
That this joy, ever full, will ever rise
And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom
In the kingdom

Have you bought your copy yet? What are you waiting for?!

Congratulations, Dave and Licia, on this milestone. Thank for you "Fire and Stone!"

"Stole My Fame (To Grace)" by the Gray Havens

I'm like a kid in a candy store. Our favorite band has done it again.

Here is a live version--in one take!--of The Gray Haven's new song "Stole My Fame (To Grace)" from their very-soon-to-be-released album Fire and Stone.

This is one of my favorite songs from the album (my first favorite is "Far Kingdom" and the second is "Jack and Jill (pt. 2)."  It's a song about how grace works and it's super-catchy and fun while getting across an important message.

Enjoy!

"Sirens" by The Gray Havens

Our favorite band is giving away yet another song!

This time, it's "Sirens" from their soon to be released album Fire and Stone. The free download is over at Justin Taylor's "Between Two Worlds" Blog. Go get it now.

They've also released their first animated video for "Sirens." I love how it tells the story of the song about how temptation works and how to defeat it.

Intro Video for "Fire and Stone" by the Gray Havens

A new video introducing both our favorite band and their upcoming new release.

Hear Dave and Licia talk about storytelling, love of books, musical depth, variety, and a number of other key ideas. {Also a cameo from their producer, Mitch Dane, about what he loves about their music.}

The background music will sound familiar to those who have viewed The Resisting Gossip Teaching Series!

"Songs in the Night" Live & Acoustic by the Gray Havens

Our favorite band has done it again. Dave and Licia Radford have given us another music video in advance of their new album's release on January 6th.

It's live and acoustic, and you can just about feel the heat coming off that fire!

Dave Radford on the backstory of the new Gray Havens song, "Far Kingdom."

Can't wait for their new album to release on January 6th!

"Far Kingdom" by the Gray Havens

Another great acoustic version video from the Radfords.

I love the yearning in "Far Kingdom."

Can't wait for the full "Fire and Stone" album to come out on January 6th!

There is a far kingdom
A ways from here
Beyond the storm and the sea
There will be no need of darkness
And none for tears
When that far kingdom I see

There’s a river we will know
Ever clear and ever full
From the fount that overflows
In the light of the King
And when we drink it we will find
That this joy, ever full, will ever rise
And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom
In the kingdom

There is a far kingdom
On the other side of the glass
And by a faint light we see
Still there is more gladness
Longing for the sight
Than to behold or be filled, by anything

There’s a river we will know
Ever clear and ever full
From the fount that overflows
In the light of the King
And when we drink it we will find
That this joy, ever full, will ever rise
And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom
In the kingdom

There is a far, far kingdom
There at the end of the sea
Where they know my name
And until that far, far kingdom
Calls me home
Oh, my soul, I will wait

For the river we will know
Ever clear and ever full
From the fount that overflows
In the light of the King
And when we drink it we will find
That this joy, ever full, will ever rise
And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom
In the kingdom
And it’ll rise on, in the kingdom
In the kingdom

"The Stone" (Live Acoustic Version) by The Gray Havens

Can't wait for the full album to come out on January 6th!

But this is a great teaser--a new version of "The Stone," and it's live so you get to wonder if Dave's glasses are going to fall off before the end of the song!

"The Stone" by The Gray Havens

Our favorite band has done it again.  The Gray Havens have rolled out "The Stone," a single from their upcoming album Fire and Stone (of which I've gotten an advanced copy, and it's excellent!).

You can listen to "The Stone" and watch the lyric video below (hint: it's connected to the resurrection) and buy a high quality recording at Bandcamp or iTunes for only $1.00.

We're looking forward to having the Radfords play and sing for us at Lanse Free Church on April 27th.

The Gray Havens "Where Eyes Don't Go"

Heather and I can't seem to turn this album off. It's only 6 songs, but we've both had it on a pretty continuous loop since we downloaded it yesterday.

I think the freshness of the sound and the sweetness of the lyrics are how they got into our hearts so fast.  Read about this couple at Tim Challies's blog--they're EFCA!
We desire our music to be edifying to believers and evangelistic at some level to the hearts and imaginations of non-believers. Our desire for the album is also that it might serve as a stepping stone or launching point for other creative projects that will also seek to make truth beautiful. To the extent we see Christ as beautiful, our hearts are changed, which is what will ultimately save the world.
Get it while it's free and leave a tip if you can at Noisetrade.

TobyMac's "Speak Life" and Gossip

Our family has been enjoying the latest album from TobyMac (who my kids have a hard time believing is nearly a decade older than their dad!).

His song, Speak Life, (embedded below) talks about the power of our words.  In every conversation, we have the opportunity to lift up or tear down. (Hear Toby talk about the story behind this song.)

Gossip drains life from people, but as Christians, we can choose to speak life (Eph 4:29).

Pomplamoose (Musical Grapefruit)

Okay, Art-Friends, this is a new musical group to check out.

You may have already heard of Pomplamoose (which means "Grapefruit" in French) as they've been around for 2 years and have hundreds of thousands of youtube fans, but I hadn't until this week.

Pomplamoose is Jack Conte and Nataly Dawn, two multi-talented & multi-instrumented musicians.

They collaborate on a variety of music.  My favorite, so far, are their "video songs" which are a new medium with 2 rules:
"1. What you see is what you hear (no lip-syncing for instruments or voice).
2. If you hear it, at some point you see it (no hidden sounds)."

They cover a lot of songs by different artists (NOTE:  Be discerning in what you listen to and watch. They are not a "Christian" band.), but my favorite is an original song by them:
"If You Think You Need Some Lovin'"

Enjoy.  (Ignore the silliness at the end, unless you're into that sort of thing.)

God's People Singing

Chuck Colson on the reclamation of Christians singing (and not just listening to the music).

This is one of my concerns about the church in America.

I praise the Lord that LEFC knows how to raise the roof in praise.

Durocher Family Ministries Concert

We've invited Paul & Judy Durocher and their 12 children (yes, you read that right!) to give a concert at LEFC on Friday, October 2nd.

Check out their website for more information about this really neat musical Christian family.

Cross-Centered Worship

I've written before about the Hot Orthodoxy in Song of Sovereign Grace Music.

They now have a new website and their leader, Bob Kauflin has a great article at Boundless on The Cross: Crucial in Worship. A true gift to the church!
